FCVS: Facts and Fiction

Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS)

We run into questions regarding FCVS on a daily basis. What do they do? What don’t they do?  Here are some of the basics:

Is FCVS required to get my license?

While there are a handful of states that currently require an FCVS profile, there are others that will not accept FCVS. If you’re licensing in a “required” state, the initial profile will add a few months to the process, but chances are that it will come in handy for future licenses.
PLS will help you set this up if needed.
Is FCVS all I need to get my license?
FCVS does verify a lot of information, but in many cases there is additional information required by the state board. The FCVS will obtain primary source verification for any data that is considered Methodical Information, such as:

• Medical School
• Post Graduate Training
• Exams
• Board certification
• Board action history
• ECFMG (if applicable)

Verifications not handled by the FCVS include:

• Employment verification/history
• Hospital privileges and affiliations
• NPDB profiles
• State license verifications
• Reference letters
• Specialty board verification
• Malpractice verification
• AMA profile

Will FCVS do all the work in getting my verifications
For the verifications which will be included in your profile (please see above), FCVS will make three attempts to retrieve them, but if they’re unsuccessful in doing so, the responsibility falls back on the physician. Which ties into our next question…

What if my Medical School is not responsive?

We get this question frequently regarding many international medical schools, simply because of the time differences and cultural exchanges. If you know that getting your transcripts will be difficult, and you’re planning to get multiple licenses throughout your career (which is more than likely in this day of emerging telemedicine), we highly recommend establishing an FCVS profile. Setting up an initial profile can be arduous if you choose to do it alone (PLS will set up the profile for free with your license order), but ordering a subsequent profile from your established credentials will be much easier in the future.
So is an FCVS profile the right way to go? As you can see above, it really comes down to the license you’re pursuing and your specific circumstances. To find out if it’s right for you, feel free to give one of our helpful consultants a call at 888-551-2140. We’ll be happy to review your situation, whether or not you choose to use our service.

For a doctor seeking a medical license, PLS will take on the entire process, including eligibility research, paperwork, verifications, and follow up.

Bottom line is, FCVS will do a few things, depending on if the state even uses them. But by and large the most difficult tasks of obtaining state licensure, falls upon the physician.
The most difficult verifications are for individual hospital credentialing, anyway, no matter in what state you’re licensed. FCVS does nothing with those.
